Emerald is the most accepted birthstone for June but Agate has an equal claim. The Americans however, have adopted the Moonstone with the Pearl as an alternative. It is the gem of Cancer (The Crab) June 21st to July 20th.
The Guardian Angel for June is Muriel whose talismanic gem is also the Emerald.
The Special Apostle is Thomas.
The flower is the Lily, Honeysuckle or Hawthorn.
Lucky charms ascribed to this month are the Windmill, Mercury, Book, Fox, Squirrel, Monkey and Cat.
A perfect Emerald is the most expensive of all precious stone but perfection is very rare. Like the Aquamarine , the Emerals is a variety of Beryl, partly differing from other varieties in the fact that it contains traces of Chromic Oxide.
Nerowas said or have used an Emerald through which to views the combats of the gladiatores and an early belief was that it was held capable of quickening the intelligence, removing all bodily pains, neutralising the action of poisions, prolonging life and preserving women in child-birth. A very curious belief was that if a snake fixed his eyes on an Emerald, he immediately became blind. Thomas Moore in his poem ?Lalla Rookh?, write :-
? With eyes so pure, that from their ray
Dark vice would turn abashed away,
Blinded like serpents, when they gaze,
Upon the Emerals?s virgin blazw.?
The finest Emeralds are found in Columbia, Egypt and the Ural Mountains in Russia. They are rarely brilliant cut like the Diamond, being usually step cut and square or rectangular in shape. Good quality stones are very rare and large stone with complete freedom from flaws are practically non-existant. Synthetic Emeralds are not yet on the market but imitation stones are very common and any doubt should be removed by submitting the stone to a scientific test by an expert.
The alternative birthstone for June is also the birthstone for May.
The Moonstone, adopted by the Americans, is rarely used in England as a birthstone but it is interesting to know that it is regarded as a very potent love charm and is accepted in many parts of India as a sacred stone.
